This is a place that, for years, has been trapped in the spiral of violence, where fear and death become part of everyday life.
What makes this crime even more heartbreaking is that Miguel Ángel López, one of the victims, was not only another inhabitant of this area, but also a man recognized for his humanitarian work, who for years dedicated himself to collecting the bodies of victims of violence and giving them a dignified burial.
The tragedy of his death is tinged with a cruel irony
Miguel Ángel not only owned the funeral home in the region, but had become an anonymous hero for many families in Catatumbo, those who are in the most remote and dangerous areas, where the authorities do not dare to reach.
His bravery allowed him to carry out one of the most humane, but at the same time riskiest, tasks in a context of war and violence. He had become renowned as an embalmer, thanatologist and mortician in one of the most troubled regions of the world.
Their job was not only to collect the bodies, but to do everything possible to preserve them, despite adverse conditions and constant risk.
Miguel Ángel had narrated it in a documentary made by the Realidades channel, where, with a serenity that contrasted with the harshness of his surroundings, he recounted how death had become his means of life.
«I live off the deceased, I receive death with open hands«he said in his interviews. His words, loaded with deep pain, resonated with chilling clarity: «In this region, the authorities fear carrying out the removal of bodies. Many of them appear on the roadsides or in abandoned fields, and the situation is so dangerous“that not even the neighbors come to help.”
