Santo Domingo.-The delay in the bureaucracy to process the extradition request of Joel Ambiórix Pimentel García (alias La J) to Spain was what caused him to be provisionally released, since the 45 days limit set by the treaty with Dominican Republic to send the documentation after the person was detained.
It is also established that the extradition request filed against the accused Pimentel García is due to two murders that he is attributed to having committed in the “El Pinito” prison, in La Vega.
The one known as “La J” is also accused of having threatened the Attorney General of the Republic, Miriam Germán Brito, for having arranged the transfer of a group of inmates to the aforementioned prison, where he maintained his influence for criminal activities.
However, this aspect is not contained in the extradition request, which has not been executed because it was sent out of date to the Spanish authorities.
It is based on the fact that Joel Ambiórix Pimentel García is credited with being responsible for having the inmate Alejandro Vidal poisoned and Gregorio Matos Carrasco strangled.
“La J” was arrested in San Sebastián de los Reyes, in Spain, on May 29, 2024, after the Dominican authorities imposed a red alert on the International Police for the two murders with which he is accused.
The information about the arrest was communicated to the chief prosecutor of La Vega, Aura Luz García.
From that moment on, the Dominican authorities had a period of 45 days to process the documentation supporting the facts for the extradition request, according to the treaty between the two countries.
On July 12, 2024, the file was deposited in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which processed it to the Dominican embassy in Spain. The latter deposited the documents in the Spanish Foreign Ministry on July 24, but the accused had already been released.
However, the delay that caused the release does not invalidate the extradition request and this is why it is specified that “La J” was released “with a measure due to the extradition documentation not arriving within the deadline.”
The threat to Germán
Although the accused came to the public spotlight because Attorney General Miriam Germán Brito herself reported that he called her by phone to threaten to harm her son, this incident is not what motivated the request for a coercive measure, according to the documents. sent to Spain.
In May of last year, the Attorney General’s Office explained that among the charges that the extraditable La J must face in the Dominican courts are the violation of articles 295, 296 and 301 of the Dominican Penal Code, which carry a sentence of up to 30 years in prison. .
