The city halls of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói presented to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) the nomination dossier to host the 2031 Pan-American and Parapan-American Games. joint application through the letter of intent delivered at the beginning of December.
The presentation of the dossier took place this Thursday (16) at an event with the participation of the mayors of Rio, Eduardo Paes, and of Niterói, Rodrigo Neves, and the president of the COB, Marco La Porta. The meeting took place at the Olympic Park, located in Barra da Tijuca, west of the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
In his speech, Paes highlighted the large number of sports equipment that is already available, much of it built in preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games. The harmony between the two municipalities was mentioned by both mayors.
Withdrawal from São Paulo
On the same day, São Paulo announced his withdrawal and expressed support for the candidacy of Rio and Niterói. Since 2023, the capital of São Paulo had been expressing interest in hosting the Pan 2031. The withdrawal was announced by the city hall through a note, in which it praised the infrastructure of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói and also mentioned the 2016 Olympics hosted in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
“The objective now is to work together so that the Pan-American Games come to Brazil”, adds the text.
The city that will represent Brazil in the international dispute will be chosen by the COB assembly on January 29th, when the candidacies will be defended.
The final decision is made within the scope of Panam Sports, the continental entity responsible for the Pan American Games. The expectation is that the choice will be announced in August.
At this moment, the only city that competes with Rio and Niterói is Assunção. The Paraguayan capital announced its interest in hosting the sporting event in December.
