Counselor Arturo Castillo Loza, president of the Federal Voter Registry Commission (RFE), explained that the INE has been carrying out this type of work since 2017, but today at the juncture of a potential wave of repatriates to our country from the United States, measures need to be strengthened.
“Although the INE is not an authority on immigration matters, we are the one that issues the most accepted official identity document at the national level” and that is why it is required to act, he explained in the General Council session in which the request was analyzed. of budget expansion that the electoral body will make.
“Why is the voter ID card important? Because without an official Mexican identification document, Mexicans simply cannot carry out banking procedures, they cannot carry out official procedures, they cannot rent a home, they could not even obtain a job, hence the relevance of the work that the Institute does in terms of identification of Mexicans and Mexicans,” he said.
The counselor indicated that many of our compatriots could eventually “be subject to this unfortunate repatriation process and could arrive in Mexico without official identification and upon arriving in these conditions they could also be subject to significant risks of labor, economic and social exclusion.”
However, he clarified that this will be possible if the requested budget expansion is completed and thus be able to serve the repatriated people.
