Minister-elect Fernández for Martínez’s resignation from the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Army: “I imagine he made the decision with the institution in mind”

Minister-elect Fernández for Martínez's resignation from the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Army: "I imagine he made the decision with the institution in mind"

The future Minister of Defense, Maya Fernández, referred to the resignation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Ricardo Martínez, asserting that “I imagine that he made the decision with the institution in mind regarding the investigation carried out by the minister” Romy Rutherford, who is leading an investigation for fraud and has Martínez as accused, who resigned from his position hours after being questioned about the case.

“I did not previously know of this, but I imagine that as Commander in Chief he put the institution first and that is why he resigned. In that sense, it is appropriate,” Fernández said.

Regarding the standard of probity that will be required of the Armed Forces during the government of the elected president, Gabriel Boric, he emphasized that this is a priority axis on which work will be done to avoid and prevent new situations of fraud from occurring.

“This is a priority issue, but I insist, I am not a minister yet. I can say that it is a priority issue for President Boric. In due course it will be announced,” she said.
