Tariffs will harm the US and Mexico, says Foreign Minister De la Fuente

Tariffs will harm the US and Mexico, says Foreign Minister De la Fuente

“Actually, we talked about the possibility of tariffs being applied at a given time, and the reactions that I heard, mainly from the governor, but also from some legislators, is that any type of tariff would be very harmful to the economy. from Arizona too, for the jobs that are generated here,” he said.

He mentioned that the trade relationship between Arizona and Mexico generates 20 billion pesos annually and 100,000 jobs, so he commented that instead of tariffs, it is necessary to strengthen the free trade alliance between Mexico, the United States and Canada, since He assured that this union has given “good results.”

“We think that, more than the tariff exit, what we need is to strengthen the free trade alliance that we have that has given good results, prepare for a review of the Treaty (T-MEC) in 2026, and strengthen what we already have, which is no small thing, it is the strongest and most dynamic market in the world. Our intention is for this Treaty to be enriched, reviewed as planned, and continue to allow us to have benefits for the three countries,” he commented.

In addition, the chancellor asserted that Mexico is prepared to receive Mexicans who decide to return to Mexico or who are deported by the US government regardless of their immigration status.

“We are prepared to receive, and receive, of course, with open arms all Mexican migrants who decide to return or who find themselves forced to return. “We are prepared to receive them with enormous dignity as they deserve, regardless of their immigration status,” he commented.

He mentioned that he will also meet with the immigration authorities “to interact with them, to show them the true interest that the government of Mexico has in maintaining this cordial, coordinated and cooperative relationship with the border states and with all the states of the American Union.” .

This comes after Donald Trump announced this Tuesday – that once he is named president of the United States – he will create a new agency called the External Revenue Service to collect tariffs, taxes and all revenue from foreign sources.
