Judge Brian Cogan was in charge of sentencing Joaquín Guzmán Loera and Genaro García Luna, in what has become a major media case against the heads of the Sinaloa Cartel.
Meanwhile, the lawyers of Joaquín Guzmán López and Ovidio Guzmán López, known as ”Los Chapitos”, maintain negotiations with United States authorities to reach a plea agreement.
The prosecutors in charge of the case want to reach an agreement with Ovidio Guzmán before February 27, while they expect the same with Joaquín Guzmán López before March 19, dates established to carry out their next hearings.
Ovido Guzmán was recaptured in Mexico in January 2023, after Mexican authorities released him in his first capture to avoid more violence in Sinaloa. In September of that same year, Chapo’s son was extradited to the United States.
For his part, Joaquín Guzmán surrendered on July 25 at a rural airport in El Paso, Texas. Ismael Zambada, ”El Mayo”, was with him on the aircraft.
Mexican authorities have stated that ”Los Chapitos” agreed with the United States to capture the ”Mayo”.
The fall of the capo started a war between two factions of the Sinaloa Cartel in Culiacán. The clashes have left hundreds dead in just over three months.
