Dimar warns about strong winds and waves in the Colombian Caribbean

They predict winds with speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour and waves of up to 2.8 meters in some areas.

The General Maritime Directorate (Dimar) has issued a notice to the coastal communities of the Colombian Caribbeanincluding Barranquilla, Cartagena, Coveñas, Providencia, Puerto Bolívar, Riohacha, San Andrés, Santa Marta and Turbo, on the deterioration of maritime weather conditions in the region.

According to the Dimar report, the interaction between a high pressure system and the monsoon trough is generating strong easterly trade winds, with speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour and waves of up to 2.8 meters in some areas.

It is expected that these conditions intensify in the next 72 hourswith winds that could reach 51 kilometers per hour and waves of up to 3 meters, especially on the northern and central coast of the Colombian Caribbean.

Given this situation, Dimar recommends that sailors and those who carry out activities at sea take extreme safety measures. and consult updated maritime weather reports through their official channels.

It is important that tourists and residents in coastal areas pay attention to the recommendations of the authorities and Avoid doing water activities in areas with high waves. For its part, Dimar will continue to closely monitor the evolution of meteorological conditions and will issue new reports if necessary.

Given the strong winds that are recorded in the region, it is important to follow the following recommendations:

  • Remove objects from balconies to avoid accidents. Make sure there are no flower pots, decorations or other loose objects on balconies or windows that could fall.
  • Avoid working at height during adverse weather conditions.
  • Avoid being in heavily wooded areas due to the risk of falling trees and electrical networks.
