At a press conference, Alejandro “Pacha” Sánchez, designated future Secretary of the Presidency, minimized the difficulties that have arisen in recent days regarding the lack of information in the transition process. According to Sánchez, a meeting is scheduled to take place this week in the Executive Tower with the deputy secretary of the Presidency, Rodrigo Ferrés, to advance the delivery of information.
“What we had agreed with Rodrigo was that this week we were going to meet because we would finalize the sending of information,” he said. In addition, he highlighted that the incoming ministers have maintained contacts with their counterparts to delve deeper into the corresponding issues. Sánchez recalled that presidents Luis Lacalle Pou and Yamandú Orsi had defined that the transition would be concentrated in the Executive Tower.
“We have not yet defined what day it will be, but this week we will specify that instance and we will communicate it in due course,” he added, underlining the “cordial and respectful” nature of the relations between the parties.
Neptune Project and criticism of the Arazatí model
Sánchez also referred to the Neptuno project and the proposal to build a plant in Arazatí as part of the topics that will be discussed in the transition meetings. According to the future secretary, the Frente Amplio’s critical vision of the project is still valid:
“We have been talking (…) the current Executive Branch has a very firm position regarding continuing to advance in this project, we have a critical vision, we have raised it from the beginning,” he stated.
Among the main observations, he mentioned the difficulties related to the Polder, the possible stagnation of water, the location of the intake and the proposed business model. However, Sánchez recalled that the Frente Amplio will take over the Government on March 1, so decisions remain within the power of the current Executive.
“Until we assume the National Government, we cannot make decisions. The decisions are made by the current Government,” he concluded.
