The mayor of Barra de São Miguel, in Alagoas (AL) Benedito de Lira, father of the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), died this Tuesday morning (14), at the age of 82 in Maceió. Senator for Alagoas between 2011 and 2019, he was a federal deputy for three terms, as well as a state deputy and councilor for Maceió.
Arthur Lira used his social media to speak out about the death of his father, whom he referred to as “my hero”. “My father, my hero, my reference, left us today, at 82 years old. A feeling of emptiness, pain and deep sadness fills my heart and that of our family. But he, our Biu de Lira, taught us to face frustrations, to lift our heads and move forward”, posted the president of the Chamber.

Benedito de Lira had health problems a few years ago, due to his advanced age, but he remained active, as recalled by his son. “He fought until the end, he remained firm in his work until his last strength. We already miss you so much, old man”, added Arthur Lira through Instagram.
In a note, the Chamber of Deputies recalls that Benedito de Lira was the author of the law that allows the use of generic medicines in veterinary medicine and establishes preference for them in government purchases.
He was also the rapporteur of the law that prevents the creation of taxes on CDs, DVDs and digital files produced in Brazil with musical works by Brazilian authors.
Grief
The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, ordered three days of mourning in the House. “Benedito de Lira was one of the main political leaders in Alagoas, with a career marked by public commitment. He held positions as state and federal deputy, as well as senator. I express my solidarity with the rest of his family, friends and the people of Alagoas for their loss. “, said Pacheco, in a note.
Burial
The burial of the former parliamentarian will take place on Wednesday (15), at 10 am, at the Parque das Flores cemetery, in Maceió. The wake, according to the press office of the President of the Chamber, will begin today, in the same location.
