MIAMI, United States. — The Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Havana, Mike Hammer, met with Cuban opponent Oscar Elías Biscet at his residence in Lawton, in Diez de Octubre, according to a brief note published by the diplomatic headquarters on its social networks.
“It was an honor and a pleasure to visit Dr. Biscet, recipient of the US Medal of Freedom, and his wife Elsa [Morejón]. We talked about the impact that President Carter’s life had on human rights and, of course, the current situation in Cuba,” indicates the note signed by Hammer.
For his part, Morejón declared to Las Americas Newspaper that Hammer’s visit had been “a pleasure,” as well as “great solidarity support for the human rights movement in Cuba and the political prisoners.”
Oscar Elías Biscet, known for being the founder of the Emilia Project, is part of the group of former prisoners of the Black Spring of 2003. The renowned Cuban opponent refused to go into exile after being released under agreements by the regime mediated by the Catholic Church. “
On January 7, Biscet was “arbitrarily” detained, according to the complaint of the Cubalex Legal Information Center.
According to reports, on the morning of Tuesday, January 7, the opponent left his home in the Lawton neighborhood, Havana, and found several patrol cars and State Security agents on the corner. The officers had already warned him that he would be imprisoned if he left his home in the context of the 12th anniversary of the Emilia Project, which was celebrated on January 9.
In recent years, the opponent has been arrested on several occasions. His home has also been the scene of operations that have included the confiscation of personal property and others used by the activist and his organization.
Mike Hammer, who was appointed as chargé d’affaires in Cuba by President Joe Biden, could remain in the same position during the administration of President-elect Donald Trump, which begins this January 20.
