Families with children with cancer denounce lack of medicines

At the beginning of the third month of the year, the families of people with cancer are in an emergency. They denounce that the Oncology hospital does not have medicines, even though these are from free delivery through the Unified Health System (SUS).

The president of the mothers of families, Ana Figueroa, remarked that this situation has been going on for weeks, but it was getting worse since Friday. They ensure that there are no antibiotics or corticosteroids and to date the first purchase of drugs this year has not been made.

Through the Unified Health System (SUS), the State has defined a list of medications that are delivered free of charge to all patients. However, this is not the first time that demand has not been met.

Given this situation, it is planned that on this day mothers of families meet to define the actions to follow to demand the provision of supplies and remedies. According to Figueroa, the administration explained that the lack of medicines is due to a delay in the disbursement of resources by the Government.

“Although for others this was a long weekend, for cancer patients it was an emergency, as they sought support from solidarity groups because chemotherapies cannot be postponed. This lack of supply of supplies and medicines is a never-ending storya very bureaucratic process”, he lamented.

Every year purchases of medicines and supplies are made in all hospitals. For this they require resources derived from the central level. In the hospital they claim that this year these resources have not yet been authorized.

EL DEBER tried to contact the national authorities and the hospital, but on the holiday they did not answer.

Faced with the crisis in the hospital, parents undertake campaigns to gather resources to purchase drugs for their chemotherapies. One of these cases is the family of Lucianita, a girl who suffers from leukemia and this Friday must undergo chemotherapy, but it requires collecting Bs 9,500 for the purchase of remedies.

The group Volunteers in Support of the Oncology Hospital (VAHO) promotes a solidarity campaign for the little girl. He has already collected more than Bs 3,000, but he is looking to complete what is required and he is against the clock because there are only two days left before the scheduled date for chemotherapy. Critics

The mothers of children with cancer question that the State cannot or do not comply with the obligation to deliver free medicines and despite this, he announced free bone marrow transplants, an expensive procedure that was never performed in the public system.

“How (the central level) talks about bone marrow transplantation. You seem to have no idea what a transplant is. You must first attend to the needs of the Oncology hospital, that provides conditions to patients and that covers the most expensive chemo”, remarked Figueroa.

In February, the Minister of Health and Sports, Jeyson Auza, announced that from this administration bone marrow transplants will be performed on minors free of charge.
