The Public Ministry has requested the Judiciary to increase to 18 months the extension of the preventive detention imposed on the former head of the Ministerial Cabinet, Betssy Chavezwho faces criminal proceedings for his alleged participation in the failed coup d’état led by former president Pedro Castillo on December 7, 2022.
As recalled, the Second Transitory Supreme Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in crimes committed by Public Officials presented, on January 7, an appeal to revoke the resolution issued by Supreme Judge Juan Carlos Checkley on December 27.
In this, an extension of 15 months of preventive detention had been set, which runs from December 20, 2024 to March 19, 2026.
Defense of Betssy Chávez demands alternative measures
For her part, Betssy Chávez also filed an appeal on January 9, requesting that the measure be declared unfounded and a less burdensome sanction be imposed that would allow her freedom.
Furthermore, Chávez’s legal defense has demanded the revocation of the extension and the application of less restrictive measures. He argues that preventive detention is not proportional and that there are other ways to ensure their participation in the judicial process.
