The work to expand the Juan Pablo II runway, renamed last year as the Heroes of the Insurrection Highway, the Managua Mayor’s Office reported in a statement, will extend – in section four – towards the El Dorado traffic light area. and El Riguero, which will cause a new road closure and detours in that sector.
«Starting on Saturday, January 11, 2025, the construction works will be expanded in the area between the El Dorado traffic lights and the El Riguero traffic lights. The south side of the track will be used, in two lanes for the exclusive circulation of the TUC (Collective Urban Transport)”, ordered the capital commune.
It specified that “traffic from southeast to northwest will enter this area on Mexico Street, parallel to the main track,” while vehicular traffic coming from “northwest to southwest will circulate on 16th Street, in the El Dorado residential area.” , near the Close Out store.
Light and cargo vehicles will use another detour
In the case of light and cargo vehicles in general, the municipality of Managua advised, they will have a detour enabled along “18th Street, in the El Riguero neighborhood, connecting traffic to the El Dorado runway, where only turning towards the southeast».
The municipal authorities highlighted to drivers the importance of making “use of the authorized detours to avoid inconveniences” and recommended that they not park “on the marked streets within the detour routes, in order to facilitate vehicular flow.”
The expansion of the Heroes of the Insurrection Track began in August 2023. The mega work has four sections, which cover 9.6 kilometers, although so far the Managua Mayor’s Office and the companies in charge of construction have only intervened in two sections; number one, which is located from the 7 South sector to the El Periodista roundabout, and four, which is located from the El Riguero traffic lights to the La Robelo traffic lights, on Carretera Norte.
The municipality of Managua reported in December of last year a progress of 50 percent in section one and 30 percent in section four, which also includes the construction of the Carretera Norte overpass and the expansion of the Eastern channel.
The complete project on the Track has an estimated investment of more than 200 million dollars and, according to the commune, it will have five overpasses, two bridges and between ten and eight lanes.
