The truth behind the curious dance between Lucho Garzón and Álvaro Uribe

Lucho Garzón spoke with RCN Radio about how politics was not a planned decision.

Lucho Garzón, who was born in Bogotá, recalled his first years as a student at the Camilo Torres School and the Carrasquilla School. Although he was not an outstanding student in academic subjects, he excelled in sports, especially in volleyball. Regarding his work life, he mentioned his first jobs as cadi and messengerhighlighting how difficult it was to grow up in a context of social exclusion.

“The job as a cadi was complicated. I remember when I had to look for the ball in the cold water. It was a hard task at that age,” Garzón said.

The politician and former mayor of Bogotá explained how politics was not a planned decision, but rather came as a result of his social activism. “Leadership was given, it is not studied. My vocation for politics was not thought of, it was something that happened,” he said.

Furthermore, he remembered his time at Alternative Democratic Polea party he founded, and his participation in state strikes, particularly the strike of February 1997which was one of the most significant in his career.

The famous dance with Álvaro Uribe

One of the most commented moments of the interview was Garzón’s clarification about his supposed dance with Alvaro Uribe. The scene, which has gone viral in the media, was the product of a misunderstanding. Garzón explained that, although he was indeed on a platform with Uribe, there was no such dance as many have interpreted it.

“It is impossible to dance with Uribe, he has no rhythm. I do know how to dance, I was very rumbero at the time, but that meeting was a misunderstanding. We were supporting Peñalosa, and we simply met on the stage. It wasn’t a dance, it was a scene that the production set up,” Garzón clarified.

Despite the jokes and speculation that circulate around this episode, the former mayor made it clear that politics in Colombia is sometimes full of these moments of media manipulation.

Reflections on Colombian politics

Regarding his vision on current politics, Garzón expressed his doubts about the approach to the reforms promoted by the president Gustavo Petrohighlighting that, although the reforms are necessary, they must be done more gradually and not with such urgency. “I believe in reforms, but they must be moderate. You cannot change everything at once,” he said.

He also analyzed the political scenario ahead of the 2026 presidential elections, suggesting that Peter could reach the second round, but he also mentioned the possibility of other candidates emerging with new proposals that could be successful, such as someone with similar characteristics to the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele.

The conversation also revealed more personal details about Garzón. Known for his relaxed style, Garzón mentioned that he now enjoys everyday activities such as cooking and doing housework. “I love getting into the kitchen and provoking arguments about who knows more,” he joked, while also revealing his hidden talent: make the bed perfectly.

Regarding his musical taste, Garzón shared his love for dip and the latin jazzin addition to mentioning his admiration for artists such as Shakira and Carlos Vives. As a footballer, he is a fan of real Madrid and of Millionaireshis team in Colombia.
