The organization Ve Sin Filtro registered the blocking of Telegram in Venezuela this January 10. The blockade began at seven at night by several service providers, the first to execute the measure was Movistar

The social network Telegram joined the long list of sites blocked in Venezuela this last week, reported the organization Ve Sin Filtro on the social network Movistar was responsible for executing the measure.

“They blocked Telegram in Venezuela. Cantv, Movistar, Digitel, Inter, Supercable, Airtek and G-Network are blocking telegram•org and web.telegram•org. The operation of the mobile app is also affected for many users on various Internet providers,” wrote Ve Sin Filtro.

He also added that the blocking began at 7:00 pm (local time, UTC-4) on January 10 and that Movistar was the first ISP to block the platform. “The lockdown is implemented using different techniques that could change,” he said.

“At Cantv and G-Network we have confirmed that the app is blocked,” noted the organization that is dedicated to monitoring and documenting censorship in Venezuela in the digital environment, including service interruptions, blockages and attacks.

These restrictions occur amidst arrests and constant reports of disappearances, intimidation and censorship against civil society. The most recent event is the disappearance of former presidential candidate Enrique Márquez, human rights defender Carlos Correa and journalist Julio Balza from María Corina Machado’s team.

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content is being published taking into consideration the threats and limits that have consequently been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
