The General Directorate of Penitentiary and Correctional Services (DGSPC) reported the death of the prisoner, Edward de Jesús Cruz Garcíawho was admitted to the Dr. Toribio Bencosme Hospital in this city of Mochawith a history of bronchoaspiration which triggered a Pneumonia.
The information was released through a press release, which states that the deceased was held in critical condition since last Saturday in that healthcare center in Moca, where he received medical attention due to his delicate state of health.
Roberto Hernandez Basiliogeneral director of the DGSPC, expressed his regret for the death of Cruz García and said that the institution he directs works to guarantee the health care of those deprived of liberty.
“As soon as we became aware of the state of health of this prisoner, he was given the medical care established by the protocols.to preserve his life, but his body did not respond,” said Hernández Basilio.
The head of the DGSPC recalled that the institution maintains an investigation around the facts who ruined Edward Cruz García’s health conditions as a result of an alleged incident, to establish responsibilities and find the truth.
Regarding the investigation being carried out, the intelligence services of the DGSPC Together with members of the Public Ministry, they carried out several searches at the Correction and Rehabilitation Center, La Isleta de Moca, in order to collect evidence and testimonies of the alleged event.
To date, several Penitentiary Surveillance and Treatment Agents (VTP) have been suspended.who were on duty at the time of the alleged event under investigation.
Edward de Jesús Cruz García, whose file in the system is 433110, 32 years old, had been in preventive prison since October of last year, accused of robbery.
According to the body removal report 672763, the causes of death of the prisoner were respiratory arrest, the result of a clinical condition with a history of bronchoaspiration due to prohibited substances that led to pneumonia.
The DGSPC reported that it is waiting for the autopsy of rigor by the National Institute of Forensic Science (INACIF), as established by Law 136-80, in its article 1, which requires the practice of judicial autopsy in the investigation of any case of death if the person were in prison.
