Government endorses support for González Urrutia and calls for peaceful transition

Gobierno endosa apoyo a González Urrutia y pide transición pacífica

Santo Domingo.-President Luis Abinader warned the current authorities of Venezuela that they have time to cross to the right side of history, while calling to open the doors to a peaceful transition to democracy.

When delivering his speech during an event called “Support for democracy in Venezuela” held in the Ambassadors’ Hall of the National Palace, Abinader called on Nicolás Maduro to return freedom to Venezuela, stating that it is never too late to respect the will of a town that -I suppose- they must love.

Venezuelans demonstrated yesterday in the Eugenio María de Hostos park against Maduro. efe

“No country in the world will be judged only by its wealth or power, but by its ability to defend human dignity. And in that task, there is no room for indifference or silence,” Abinader said.

He added that the Dominican Republic will hold high the banner of freedom and will not rest until Venezuela sees democracy flourish again.

Abinader insisted that the Dominican Republic, as heir to a democratic tradition and in the name of the internationalist legacy of José Francisco Peña Gómez, reiterates its commitment to those in Venezuela who fight for the right to freely choose their destiny.

He highlighted the long history of democratic solidarity of Venezuelans and added that Dominicans now have the duty to behave with the same generosity and cannot be oblivious to the drama they suffer in that country.

González Urrutia arrived at the government house after 11:00 am, took the elevator and walked to the stairs accompanied by several former Latin American presidents who are members of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA).

Freedom and democracy
Although González Urrutia did not specify whether he would travel to Venezuela today, he assured that “we will see each other soon in Caracas in freedom,” while promising that they will recover peace and democratic order.

The Venezuelan opposition leader thanked President Abinader and the former presidents of the IDEA Group for their firm and energetic support for the fight that the country has been waging for several years to recover freedom and democracy.

He declared that at all times he has shown himself in the best disposition to agree on the necessary guarantees to develop an orderly and peaceful transition, but that the Nicolás Maduro regime refuses to accept the defeat it suffered on July 28, 2023 with a difference. of almost 40 percentage points and that instead they have chosen to unleash the worst escalation of repressive violence in the history of the country.

He said that for the Venezuelan people to win this fight, the help of the region’s democrats is necessary and affirmed that the only way to respect the country’s sovereignty is to recognize the popular and sovereign mandate expressed on July 28.

In the afternoon, González Urrutia attended a mobilization in the Eugenio María de Hostos Park, located on George Washington Avenue in the National District, where dozens of Venezuelans and Dominicans gathered to demonstrate against the Chavista regime.

Edmundo González was received by the Dominican authorities as the candidate with the most votes in the presidential elections held in Venezuela on July 28, in which, according to the National Electoral Council (CNE), Nicolás Maduro was the winner.

The Venezuelan opponent was received along with several former Latin American presidents who are members of the Democratic Initiative of Spain and the Americas (IDEA), among them Laura Chinchilla, Vicente Fox, Felipe Calderón, Andrés Pastrana, Jamil Mahuad, Mario Abdo Benítez, Jorge Quiroga and Hipólito Mejía .
