The implementation of the comprehensive Majes Siguas irrigation project, located in Arequipa, continues on track. Yesterday, the Minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), Ángel Manero, announced that there are five countries interested in the execution of this work. These economies include Israel, the Netherlands, Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan.
“This work is going to be built by one of those five countries and will have high levels of quality and execution. Rest assured that he will have it,” said the official after participating in the session of the Council of Ministers.
The winner of this process will be known on April 30 of this year.
It should be noted that the comprehensive project includes Majes I, the intermediate dam and Majes II. Regarding the latter, the head of Midagri explained that an arbitration solution is currently pending.
As recalled, the Spanish company Cobra, owner of the Angostura Siguas concessionaire, initiated this process before the International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) due to a series of disagreements with the State over the concession contract.
Manero specified that the investment that the selected country will make will amount to approximately US$3,000 million.
Meanwhile, the president of the Council of Ministers, Gustavo Adrianzén, also referred to this process and pointed out that the interest of five economies is a reflection of trust.
“There are five world powers eager to invest here, in Peru. What’s that? That is trust, that is security, that is the reflection of a country that provides stability, clear rules,” he highlighted.
Likewise, he stressed that we must have confidence in what 2025 will be for the development of the country.
