The Board of Directors of the Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) established through resolution number 148-2024, the new definition of speed of the broadband internet access service that increases to 4 to 30 megabyte (Mbps) per second download, in order to make this service faster and more competitive in the country.
The provision repeals the previous definition of internet access speed contained in article number one of the General Regulation of Internet Access Service, issued by resolution number 033-2020 of May 20, 2020.
Resolution 148-2024 increases the minimum speed from 4 to 30 megabyte per second download (Mbps) and from 1 to 10 Mbps upload on the fixed broadband internet offered by providers to users.
It was signed by Guido Gómez Mazara, president of the Board of Directors; Alexis Cruz, representing the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, ex-officio member of the council; Juan Taveras Hernández and Tomás Pérez Ducy, members, and Julissa Cruz Abreu, executive director of Indotel.
Gómez Mazara explained that the new provision establishes that the internet speed must be raised to at least 30Mbps, in the case of fixed service and which is accessed through Wi-Fi networks, so that it can be considered broadband. From now on, the minimum speed will be 4 to 30 megabyte per second download (Mbps), as well as 1 to 10 Mbps upload on fixed internet, whose speed increase goes from 4 to at least 8 Mbps download for internet. mobile.
