SLP, Mexico.- The political prisoner Kevin Damián Frómeta Castro ended the hunger strike that he maintained for 14 days in the penitentiary center known as 15-80located in the municipality of San Miguel del Padrón, in Havana, as confirmed by the legal information center Cubalex based on statements from the young man’s mother.

Caridad Castro RuizFrómeta’s mother, reported that she managed to see him and dissuade him from continuing with the hunger strike to avoid further physical and mental deterioration.

However, the young man replied that he has “the will and courage to put the only thing he has, his body,” in protest of a drug trafficking charge in prison that the prison authorities want to accuse him of.

“He has lost considerable muscle mass, he is haggard and weak, with the marks of the handcuffs placed very tightly, threatened that they have a paper that he signed acknowledging his guilt which is a lie and is manipulation, I will be closely aware of everything about “my son’s situation,” the mother denounced.

Castro Ruiz expressed to Martí News who managed to see his son in jail after weeks without hearing from him. When she went to the prison, the authorities spoke with her. “They had a (drug) trafficking charge placed in the machine (computer) that I did not accept, and they, in front of me, removed it,” he said.

In a social media publication, the woman, addressing State Security, stated that she will continue in the battle for the injustices committed against her son.

In a letter sent to his mother, who read it in a live Facebook post, Frómeta reported that during the days of voluntary starvation he did not receive any type of attention from the penitentiary authorities of the prison, although they were aware of the strike.

The political prisoner would be under investigation for an event that occurred in La Lima, the open regime camp in which he was located before being taken to prison 1580. In the information shared with Martí Newsthe young man’s mother revealed there that she had “a problem” with an officer for “a drug crime that they want to accuse him of and that he does not recognize.”

Frómeta Castro was condemned to five years of deprivation of liberty when he was barely 19 years old, on charges of sedition after participating in the protests on July 11, 2021 at the Esquina de Toyo, in the Havana municipality of 10 de Octubre.

In a regime with a long repressive history, in 2024, 786 abuses against political prisoners were recorded.

According to the Cuban Observatory of Human Rights (OCDH), the Island closed 2024 with 952 political prisoners.
