The mining businessman Roque Benavides proposed the creation of a Ministry of Formalization to address the problems of mining informality and extend efforts to the entire country’s economy.

“The great evils in Peru are corruption, centralism and informality, in addition to citizen security, of course. In that sense, we have to think outside the box and no longer be thinking about the Ministry of Production, the Ministry of Energy and Mines,” he said in dialogue with the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP).
In that sense, he pointed out that the country needs a massive formalization campaign. For the creation of this institution, Benavides pointed out that there is collaboration with international organizations such as the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
On the other hand, he pointed out that more rigorous control is needed over the supply chain and suppliers in mining regions such as Madre de Dios, in order to monitor the trafficking of materials used for illegal mining.
“They should put cameras and sensors to detect who is carrying the supplies. That the dynamite cartridges have a record of their numbering and manufacturer. And of course, supervise the sale of machinery. Who buys the machinery from them? What if they are paying you in cash? That is part of informality,” he said.
