Contrary to other countries, Cuba’s speech, on this second day of the extraordinary session of the UN General Assembly, was marked by criticism of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United States. In the group of few Russian allies, Cuba condemned the sanctions applied to the country headed by Vladimir Putin and accused NATO of acting with “hypocrisy” in the conduct of the war with Ukraine.
“Cuba rejects this hypocrisy and this double standard in the stance of NATO. In 1999, there was an aggression against Yugoslavia and the countries of Europe did not avoid the great loss of life for geopolitical reasons.. The United States used force on several occasions in countries sovereigns to change regimes, interfering in the internal politics of other countries”, said the Cuban ambassador, Pedro Luís Pedroso Cuesta.
Still in the opinion of the Cuban, the United States treats millions of inhabitants of the invaded countries as a “side effect” and accused the US government of carrying out “wars of looting and looting”.
Another point highlighted by Pedro Cuesta was the draft resolution defended at the UN by the Western powers regarding the situation in Ukraine. According to him, the text, vetoed by Russia in the Security Council in recent days, was not made to bring solutions. The Cuban ambassador argued that the document suffers from the same defects and lack of balance. “It does not take into account the sovereignty of all parties, nor does it recognize the responsibility of those who perpetrated the aggressive actions that increased the scale of this conflict,” he criticized.
The Cuban representative ended his speech by emphasizing that the country defends a diplomatic solution to the conflict: “We want negotiations, not war. This is the only way to resolve this conflict. Cuba will continue to defend a diplomatic solution, which is serious, constructive and realistic”, he assured.
Hungary
Today, the Hungarian ambassador to the UN, Zsuzsanna Horváth, condemned the Russian invasion of Ukrainian territory and said that she will receive Ukrainian refugees. “In response to the humanitarian crisis, Hungary is ready to receive refugees.” Zsuzsanna said many countries have asked for “our help” and in doing so are creating a humanitarian corridor for those fleeing Ukraine who do not have visas to enter.
Still on the role of Hungary, which is a member of NATO and a neighbor of Ukraine, the ambassador said that the country should place refugees in nearby airports to make trips to other countries.
Historic
The purpose of the session is “for the 193 members of the UN to take a stand” on the war that erupted due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and on “the violation of the United Nations Charter”. The vote should take place tomorrow (2), after speeches by all registered member countries.
The extraordinary UN meeting on an emergency basis is extremely rare. Since the group’s founding in 1945, there have been only 11. This is the first time since 1982 that the Security Council has asked for a session of the General Assembly. The request came after Russia vetoed last Friday (27) a draft of the UN, the Security Council Resolution that would have condemned the invasion of Ukraine.
