President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sanctioned this Tuesday (31) Complementary Law 211, which prevents the resumption of the Mandatory Insurance for the Protection of Victims of Traffic Accidents (SPVAT, the former DPVAT). The decision is part of the cost cutting package of the government.

On December 18, deputies and the government had already signed an agreement to revoke the law that would create the new SPVAT. The return of insurance for 2025 had been predicted by a complementary law signed last May.
The insurance was intended to guarantee compensation for personal injuries to victims of traffic accidents and would be mandatory. Compensation for death, disability and reimbursements for medical care and funeral services would be provided.
With the repeal of the law, accident victims who do not have private insurance will not be entitled to compensation. The charge had been ended by a provisional measure signed by then-president Jair Bolsonaro in 2019.
