Former United States President Jimmy Carter, elected in 1976, died this Sunday, December 30, at the age of 100.

The oldest American president died at his home in the small town of Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, Rosalynn, who died in November 2023 at age 96, spent most of their lives, the Carter Center reported.

Carter, a moderate southern Democrat and former governor of Georgia, defeated Republican President Gerald Ford in 1976, but in his 1980 re-election bid he lost to Ronald Reagan, who won by a wide margin. After his presidency, he began tireless activity in favor of human rights in the world that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, AP reported.
