Specialists from the Antonio Lorena Hospital in Cusco performed a complex surgical intervention to treat a 35-year-old patient, referred from Sicuani, who suffered from constant lower back pain for more than six months. The patient also had decreased strength in her lower extremities and loss of sphincter control, symptoms caused by a tumor located in a critical area of the lumbar spine where the nerves converge.

The diagnosis confirmed the need for surgery. high complexity to remove the tumor, task led by a multidisciplinary team headed by the neurosurgeon Tomás Ccapatinta, along with anesthesiologists, nurses and specialized technicians.
The operation was carried out using neurophysiological monitoring, which allowed professionals to preserve the patient’s motor and sensory functions, avoiding damage to the surrounding nerves.s. During the intervention, screws were placed in the lumbar spine to ensure its stability and complete removal of the tumor was achieved.
