The sanctions applied by the Council of State and the United States Congress against 20 political operators of the Nicaraguan dictatorship used to undermine democracy and escalate corruption from higher education institutions demonstrate that the US government continues to pay attention to totalitarian excesses of the Nicaraguan dictatorship, says exiled opponent Héctor Mairena.
This Friday, December 27, the United States Department of State notified the designation of 20 Ortega employees in the National Council of Universities (CNU), the National Council of Evaluation and Accreditation (CNEA) and several universities.
They are punished with the Engel List, where the US Government identifies corrupt and undemocratic actors from the so-called northern triangle of Central America, which includes Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
For Mairena, what these designations prove is that “the international community, and in this particular case the United States, have not stopped paying attention to what is happening in Nicaragua.”
The exiled opposition leader recalled that the dictatorship in recent weeks has promoted a series of actions aimed at consolidating an increasingly totalitarian dictatorship, and along these lines they have ordered legal reforms until leading to the total reform of the Constitution.

“The dictatorship continues to advance with the constitutional reform, in particular, to establish with supposed legality a totalitarian state in Nicaragua, but that is not going unnoticed by the international community,” says Mairena.
Likewise, it mentions that this time the US authorities assumed a focus on the officials of the confiscated universities and against political operators who hold positions in the CNU.
He emphasized that the fact that the US has focused on officials of university institutions “proves, once again, that this act of barbarism that Ortega has committed by closing, confiscating and robbing universities has not gone unnoticed.”
For his part, the Deputy Undersecretary of the Council of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian A. Nichols, through his official X account, warned that “when people cannot trust their institutions, they look for opportunities in other spaces.” .

In that sense, the American diplomat indicates that “today’s (sanctions) report on “Corrupt and undemocratic actors in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua brings to light the people who undermine the rule of law and supports the surrender of accounts and transparency in the region.
There were 20 political operators of the dictatorship placed in higher education institutions, who from now on are included in the list of corrupt and undemocratic in the region.
