Migration: Mexico gets ready to give asylum to Ukrainians and Russians

This consideration will be given to Ukrainian students, businessmen or tourists who are in the country, but the same will be given to Russians, so that in both cases they are not forced to go to an area that is in armed conflict, he explained before members of the Committee on Border and Immigration Affairs of the Senate.

“We do not exempt the Russians because ultimately it is not (granting) a country the request (for asylum) but its inhabitants, then they will also be treated in consideration of the war conflict and give them temporary or permanent refuge so that they are calm and can be in this wonderful country”, he explained.

In Mexico there are a total of 11,209 people of Ukrainian origin, reported Migration. Between January and February of this year, 9,903 people from that nation entered; in addition there are another thousand 306 with temporary residence (388) and permanent (900). There are also six visitors for humanitarian reasons.

From 2018 to February 2022, 92,831 Ukrainians have visited Mexico, of which 6,050 came in January and 3,853 in February.

In the case of people of Russian nationality, 28,353 have entered the national territory so far this year. From 2018 to last February, 288,038 Russians have visited Mexico.

Garduño appeared before a legislative commission for the first time in the three years he has been in office. He was questioned about the use of the National Guard in tasks to contain migrants and violations of the human rights of people who come from other countries to cross into the United States through Mexican territory.

Senator Beatriz Paredes, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), stated that Mexico cannot demand respect from Mexican migrants in the United States if it mistreats migrants who come from other nations.

The official did not admit that there is any problem of human rights violation and minimized the cases.

The National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) headed by Rosario Piedra, he reported, has received 2,835 complaints against the INM, of which 2,618 were concluded without proving any violation of individual guarantees.

Garduño referred to what happened in the six-year terms of Carlos Salinas and Ernesto Zedillo: “That was the violence against human rights, now nothing happens to those who are beating up a few goops, it wasn’t like that before.”

Additionally, he reported that there are 88 precautionary measures and protection of human rights, because he considered that today there is the accompaniment of a visitor from the CNDH.
