The National Federation of Rice Growers of the Dominican Republic (FENARROZ) expresses its satisfaction and gratitude to President Luis Abinader by the promulgation of Decree 693-24, a measure that reinforces the country’s food security and sovereignty, protecting national rice production and guaranteeing the stability of the sector.
In this sense, Marcelo Reyes Jorge, president of FENARROZ, pointed out that the Dominican Republic is a highly productive nation, where food security and sovereignty are fundamental for well-being and social development.
“It is the right of people to define their own food and agriculture, protect and regulate national production to achieve sustainable development objectives. This decree reinforces that right and allows us to ensure a sustainable supply of rice, a strategic crop for the stability of the country,” said Reyes Jorge.
The rice industry is not only vital for food security, but also for the national economy. This sector employs more than 30,000 direct producers and nearly 300,000 indirect workers, generating an economic impact of more than 45,000 million pesos annually.
“Guaranteeing access to sufficient, nutritious and locally produced food is key to strengthening our independence and protecting the population against possible external crises,” stressed the president of FENARROZ.
Decree 693-24 is considered a fundamental step to support farmers, promote national production and ensure self-sufficiency in one of the country’s most important crops. “Rice is part of our culture and a symbol of self-sufficiency. Its strengthening is essential to achieve greater stability and confidence in our food system,” added Reyes Jorge.
FENARROZ reiterates its commitment to working together between the government, producers and the industry to build a safer and more sustainable future for all Dominicans.
