Russia launches 'inhumane' attacks on Christmas Day, Ukraine says

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia attacked Ukraine’s energy system and several cities with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones over Christmas, which he called an “inhumane” attack

This Wednesday, December 25, Russia attacked Ukraine’s energy system and some cities with ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drones, in an “inhuman” assault on Christmas Day, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Nearly three years after the start of the war, the attacks wounded at least six people in the northeastern city of Kharkiv and killed one in the Dnipro region, its governors said.

Half a million residents of the Kharkiv region were left without heat, with temperatures just a few degrees Celsius above zero, while blackouts occurred in the capital kyiv and elsewhere.

«Today, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin has deliberately chosen Christmas to attack. What could be more inhumane? “More than 70 missiles, including ballistic missiles, and more than a hundred attack drones,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian military declared that its air defenses had shot down 59 Russian missiles and 54 drones during the night and morning of December 25.

Ukrainians celebrated their second Christmas, according to a new calendar, in another step towards eliminating Russian influence.

Most Ukrainians are Orthodox Christians and the independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church, created in 2018, agreed in 2023 to move away from the traditional Julian calendar used in Russia, where Christmas is on January 7.

Russia and the Ukrainian energy sector

Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector since the spring of this year, damaging almost half of its generating capacity and causing prolonged blackouts.

The Ukrainian air force stated that Kharkiv was attacked with ballistic missiles. Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Telegram that there was damage to non-residential civil infrastructure, without giving further details.

Dnipro Governor Serhiy Lysak said the fatality there occurred in an attack on regional electrical facilities.

«Since the morning, the Russian army has been massively attacking the Dnipro region. “Try to destroy the region’s electrical system,” he declared.

Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko claimed on Facebook that Russia was massively attacking the energy sector and that restrictions were being applied to electricity supplies.
