Deaths in Christmas operation rise to eight; 11 children intoxicated with alcohol

Saint Dominic .-Traffic accidents in the country continue to be regrettable events that each year bring pain to families, this despite the fact that a slightly smaller number is recorded over the years.

In the second bulletin of the first phase of the Christmas operation “Conscience for Life 2024-2025”, 60 traffic accidents had been registered on highways and avenues in the country, which left a balance of 72 affected and six people dead, which which brings the total to eight.

In this bulletin that collected data from the last 24 hours, until 6:00 in the morning yesterday, of the total accidents, 48 ​​involved motorcycles, which continue to lead the statistics of road accidents in the country; followed by six light vehicles, four run overs, a bus and a SUV.

According to the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), Juan Manuel Méndez, of the deaths, two were caused by light vehicles, three by motorcycles and one by being run over.

In short, until yesterday, a total of 75 traffic accidents were reported, affecting 91 people.
According to César Roque, director of the Darío Contreras Traumatological Hospital, located in Santo Domingo Este, yesterday was a crucial day, since although compared to other years, the number of patients was lower, it is expected that this could increase due to people returning to their homes, as well as the traditional reheating of Christmas Day.

Roque reiterated that they have sufficient supplies to respond to any emergency that may arise.

Intoxicated minors
Likewise, Méndez showed his concern when reporting on the figures for alcohol poisoning, in which of the 73 people affected and reported in the second bulletin, 11 turned out to be minors between the ages of 10 and 17.

“The issue year after year of children intoxicated with alcohol is worrying. I hope that the Public Ministry takes its action,” he said, emphasizing the consequences that it can leave on children, in addition to alluding to the fact that these figures always increase considerably for end-of-year celebrations.

From the 23rd until yesterday morning, the total number of alcohol poisonings reached 107 cases. 35 people have also been treated for food poisoning, for a total of 48.

The provinces that have reported the most cases are Puerto Plata, San Cristóbal, National District, Santo Domingo, La Vega and San Pedro de Macorís.

Meanwhile, the National Health Service (SNS) pointed out that in the hospitals of the public network, depending on the variables of the operation, 335 people have been treated, in addition 250 were treated for other reasons for a total of 585 health care services.

The Military and Police Commission of the Ministry of Public Works and Communications carried out 683 road assistance to the public and 618 medical assistance.

The Civil Defense reported that in the last 24 hours it provided 12 assistance, consisting of headaches, cures, blood pressure measurement, accident dispatch and others.
