The Environmental Commission of the Megalopolis (CAMe) has suspended the preventive phase for PM2.5 particles in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM), after an improvement in air quality recorded at 4:00 p.m. on December 25, 2024.
Most monitoring stations reported good to acceptable air quality levels. Although in the stations Nezahualcoyotl and Santiago Acahualtepec High levels of PM2.5 were still detected, the trend indicates a decrease in concentrations.
This improvement is attributed to the reduction in the burning of fireworks and bonfires, as well as to meteorological conditions that favor the dispersion of pollutants.
The preventive phase had been activated due to 24-hour average concentrations of 81.7 µg/m³ of PM2.5 particles at the Santiago Acahualtepec station, located in the Iztapalapa mayor’s office.
The high concentrations were a consequence of extraordinary emissions due to the widespread burning of fireworks during Christmas celebrations, added to atmospheric conditions that made the dispersion of pollutants difficult.
The CAMe recommends that the population stay informed about air quality through the “AIRE CDMX” application, available for iOS, Huawei and Android devices, and on the official websites:

In addition, it urges citizens to avoid burning fireworks and holding bonfires during the end-of-year festivities, with the aim of preventing environmental contingencies and protecting public health.
