Paúl León was arrested in Valera, Trujillo state, on July 30 while covering a street protest


The National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) reported this Tuesday, December 24, that VPItv cameraman Paúl León, detained in the context of the post-election protests in Trujillo, was released from prison.

In their social networks, The SNTP indicated that León was being held in the Tocuyito prison, Carabobo state, where he was transferred from Trujillo about 20 days after being arbitrarily detained.

The SNTP, which keeps an updated count of press professionals who were arbitrarily arrested, updated its data and indicates that there are still seven social communicators behind bars: Carlos Julio Rojas, Roland Carreño, Biagio Pilieri, José Camero, Gabriel González, Luis López and Ramón Centeno.

León’s release occurred on the same day as that of the professor at the University of Los Andres, Gustavo Torreswith whom he was arrested along with two other people in Valera on July 30 while a protest against the election results was taking place.

On August 5, he was presented before a court with jurisdiction over terrorism and charged with several crimes. He is part of the group that was sent to the Carabobo Judicial Confinement Center, better known as the Tocuyito prison. In Octoberhis transfer to trial was ordered and his place of confinement was set at the aforementioned prison.

His release from prison occurred three days after the release of the La Patilla reporter in Vargas, Ana Carolina Guaita; Arbitrarily detained on August 2 while covering the post-election protests in La Guaira, she was released after four months in prison.

Through its account on X, the SNTP recalled that Guaita was accused of allegedly committing crimes such as obstruction of public roads, inciting hatred and terrorism.

The Public Ministry reported on lsome December 23 of two new days of evaluation of judicial cases in the framework of “post-electoral violence.” At night, some 46 releases were agreed upon, in which the authorities increased to 956.
