Authorities are renewed on Saturday the 28th at the annual meeting
At a complex time for the sector due to a decrease in yields and prices that continue to be low, there will be a change of authorities at the level of the Cerro Largo Beekeepers Association.
The election of the new Board of Directors will be made within the framework of an ordinary general assembly that will be held next Saturday, December 28, late in the afternoon at the Extraction Plant.
“A call is being made to all colleagues who make up the group to attend given the topic to be addressed” invited Karina Borges.
To date, the Association has fifty active members and half a dozen honorary members, including José María Choca and Rubén Gereda.
“At the assembly there is always a review of what was done during the year. Fortunately, the association, despite belonging to a sector that does not generate much foreign currency, always has its numbers very good. It is also the time to exchange information about what we are going through at the moment and also plan for the future.” overtook THE DIARY PROFESSIONAL.
A no small fact is that on this occasion there will be a renewal of authorities. “We are going to have a new President who is a native of Tupambaé. There will be renewal of the first four members, except the Treasurer, of the Board of Directors. There are colleagues who will join the Board for the first time and others who rotate positions. It is very important that this happens because in most sectors there is an aging workforce and ours is no exception to that, there is no renewal. That is why when new people appear who want to integrate, who want to assume responsibilities, it is extremely important” considered.
LITTLE PRODUCTION AND DEPRESSED PRICES
Unfortunately, the expectations that had been generated at the beginning of the first are not being met. “In September and the first days of October we had an encouraging outlook, with very good flowering. With all these changes in the climate, the rains and the sudden drops in temperature with early mornings of 6 and 7 degrees, the production of nectar and therefore the work of the bee has been affected.” he explained. “The bees go to the flower, but since they don’t find nectar they have nothing to work with, so when they return to the hive, if they don’t take anything, they consume what they have.” he commented. “We are having a decrease in yields of around 50%” Karina Borges revealed.
“It’s something we’re all suffering from. We also continue with low prices. The export sector is very still and some prices that have been managed are low. We are around USD 1.50 to USD 1.60, prices that, given the costs that are increasing more and more, make us question our continued existence in the activity.” he warned.
“It seems not, but beekeeping is a sector that drives local economies. Generates direct and indirect labor. Since there is no production, we cannot hire anyone to help us, we do not buy materials, we do not buy drawers, we do not buy wax. “These are things that are becoming stagnant.” stressed the member of the current Board of Directors of the Cerro Largo Beekeepers Association.
“Since the prices are so low, when the beekeeper sells he does not make an amount of money that allows him to repair his vehicle, purchase a new one or invest in the hives themselves. We enter a vicious circle from which we cannot get out. “We work a lot, because maintaining the hives requires more and more of us, and the return is very poor” said Karina Borges.
