The Ministry of Transport published this Tuesday (24) an ordinance for hiring a company to rebuild the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge (Ponte do Estreito), located on the border between Maranhão and Tocantins.
On Sunday (22), the central span of the bridge, which connects the municipalities of Estreito (MA) and Aguiarnópolis (TO), gave way and knocked over at least 10 vehicles, including four trucks, three passenger cars and three motorcycles.
The publication of the ordinance makes it possible for the emergency hiring, later this year, of the contractor responsible for the project and execution of the works.
According to the ministry, around R$100 million should be invested to rebuild the bridge. The work should take around a year to complete.
According to the Maranhão Fire Department, at least four people (three women and one man) died in the collapse. Thirteen people remain missing.
