The judges of the Third Chamber of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal of the National District decided this Monday night to maintain the preventive detention of three named in the case Coral 5Gamong them, the general Juan Carlos Torres Robiou.
At the appeal hearing, the judges Pedro Sánchez (president), Daniel Nolasco and July Tamarizwhich also review measures against José Manuel Rosario Pirón and Colonel Yehudy Blandesmil Guzmán Alcántara, determined that the defendants did not provide sufficient budgets to vary the measure of 18 months in prison they are serving at the CCR XX Correction and Rehabilitation Center Najayo Men, in San Cristóbal.
The defendants will have a mandatory review of their case next March 14.
The former director of the Specialized Body for Tourist Security (Cestur), Torres Robiou, is accused of being part of a network dismantled through Operation Coral 5G, of create companies, avoid audits with fictitious squares, use seized assets as their own and destroy and fabricate evidence to keep the network hidden, among other criminal activities.
The network is accused of defrauding the Dominican State, supposedly, with more than 4,500 million pesos.
According to the accusing body, the defendants had characteristics such as creating institutions to supply them with fuel and expendable materials, which were never delivered, but for which fictitious accounts were made.
The head of the Specialized Prosecution Office of the Corruption Administrative (Pepca), Wilson Camachovalued the decision of the judges, while saying that the processes built by the Public Ministry are carried out with scientific rigor.
“We carry out processes with the highest quality standards and these processes are capable of withstanding any attack from any of the defenses,” Camacho said.
Lawyers of the Dominican State, included in the Public Patrimony Recovery Team, were satisfied with the ratification of the measures and valued that justice included the participation of the State as a victim in this case.
Although they said that they still do not have the amounts for which they sue those involved in the Coral 5G caseif they explained that they will do so when the Public Ministry presents the formal accusation.
The legal representatives of the State are José Alberto Ortíz, Rafael Rivas and Sigfrifo Alberto Caamaño García and they promised to strengthen the accusatory file much more.
