The Maranhão Fire Department updated this Tuesday (24) the numbers of the search operation for those missing after the collapse of the Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira bridge, on the border between Maranhão and Tocantins, on Sunday (22). According to the corporation, the deaths of four people (three women and one man) have been confirmed. Another 13 people remain missing.
Located on BR-226, the bridge connects the municipalities of Estreito (MA) and Aguiarnópolis (TO). On Sunday afternoon, the central span of the bridge, 533 meters long, gave way, collapsing at least 10 vehicles, including four trucks, three passenger vehicles and three motorcycles.
Trucks that fell from the bridge caused the water contamination of the Tocantins River and the interruption of water supply to residents of the region. One of the trucks was loaded with sulfuric acid.
Yesterday (23), the Minister of Transport, Renan Filho, announced that the federal government will allocate more than R$100 million for the bridge restoration works.
The National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit) established, this Tuesday (24), an investigation to investigate causes and responsibilities for the bridge collapse
