The Municipal Council of Panama approved this Monday a resolution of support for the National Government, following the statement by the President of the Republic, José Raúl Mulino, in which he highlighted that the sovereignty and independence of the country is not negotiable.
This motion was unanimously approved by the district representatives of the capital district, and was supported by the mayor of Panama City, Mayer Mizrachi.
The representative of the town of Ancón, Yamireth Batista, highlighted all the generational struggles of the Panamanian people that allowed them to achieve full sovereignty so that Panama is “one territory, one flag.”
He added that today, the reverted areas (former canal zone) are populated by Panamanians, in a territory where public and private entities, international organizations, as well as national and transnational companies that have promoted the development of the country operate.
“On December 31 we celebrated 25 years since the reversal of the Canal. We join in supporting the National Government and maintaining our position as Panamanian citizens that it is a Panamanian territory,” said the representative of Ancón.
The approval of this motion by the Municipal Council occurs after the former president and president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, demanded that Panama reduce the toll rates charged by the Panama Canal, or else he would demand their return to this country.
