The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, will send a representation of her government to the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro. “In the first case, a representation or the ambassador himself who is in Venezuela, Leopoldo de Gyves, will go.”

The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported this Monday, December 23, that she will send a representation of her government to the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro on January 10. This act marks the first time that Sheinbaum recognizes the re-election of the Venezuelan president, rejected by different national and international governments.

The Mexican president made the announcement in a conference in which she did not give more details after being questioned by a journalist from the Telesur network about her attendance at the Maduro and Donald Trump ceremonies in the United States.

“In the first case, there will be a representation or the ambassador himself who is in Venezuela, Leopoldo de Gyves, and in the second case, I understand that there are still no invitations, not only to Mexico, but there are still no invitations in general,” he declared. Sheinbaum at the National Palace.

On December 13, the Mexican president had denied having received an invitation to attend the formal ceremony on January 10 in Venezuela, where the opponent Edmundo González Urrutia also assures that he will take office.

Sheinbaum announced on October 15 that his Government would maintain an “impartial” position on the post-election crisis in Venezuela.

The then Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), spoke on August 1 with his counterparts from Colombia, Gustavo Petro, and from Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, about Venezuela, agreeing that the minutes should be shown elections of July 28.

But, although in October he did not expressly recognize Maduro’s re-election proclaimed by the National Electoral Council (CNE), Sheinbaum argued that the Constitution prohibits intervention in foreign affairs.

“We have, through the Constitution, a very clear definition of foreign policy, which is the self-determination of the people,” he stated then.
