The dream of conquering new horizons took Juan Andrés Ospina Rodríguez to Australia two and a half years ago. This young Colombian, full of dreams and goals, had initially traveled with a student visa to learn English and explore new opportunities. However, life had a tragic surprise in store for him: On December 20, he was found dead in his home, after suffering a massive heart attack.
Juan Andrés, 24 years old, had returned to Colombia three months ago to spend time with his family. “He came here in July, we were together and then he returned on September 22 to continue with his goals“Elizabeth Rodríguez, her mother, told El Tiempo with deep sadness.

A vulnerable heart
Despite his fighting spirit, Juan Andrés had a health condition that accompanied him for much of his life: a heart murmur. “When he was in Colombia this year, he had a checkup and was told he needed surgery in the future.”Elizabeth explained. Unfortunately, his heart couldn’t wait any longer.
On the day of his death, the family tried to contact him without success. Given the lack of response, they asked their roommate to verify their situation.
“They found him asleep in his bed, but he had already died.”said his mother with a broken voice. Authorities confirmed that his death was caused by a heart attack.
The fight to repatriate him
The death of Juan Andrés not only left an emotional void in his family, but also a great economic challenge. The cost of repatriating his body from Australia amounts to 14 thousand dollars, approximately 61 million Colombian pesos.
For this reason, his family and friends have started a campaign to raise funds.
