If you drive this holiday season, we recommend that you do not consume alcohol for your safety and that of others; If you are going to celebrate with a few drinks, try to have a designated driver or order a taxi.
In Mexico City the alcohol limit allowed for driving is 0.8 grams per liter in blood or 0.4 milligrams per liter in exhaled air.
This is equivalent to around three 355 milliliter beers, however, it can vary depending on the gender and weight of the person, as well as the type of alcohol consumed.
The fine for exceeding the alcohol level in the capital is 60 Measurement and Update Units (UMA), which is equivalent to 6,514 pesos in 2024.
It is accompanied by more sanctions such as administrative arrest of 20 to 36 hours, six penalty points on the driver’s license and the remission of the vehicle to the warehouse.
“Alcoholic beverages reduce the visual field and reflexes, produce a state of euphoria and overconfidence, misappreciation of distances and speed, increased aggressiveness and irritability, lack of perception of traffic signs and traffic lights or other vehicles, and increased sensitivity to glare,” warns the National Commission against Addictions (Conadic).
