Planning a trip is complicated for those of us who have pets, there is always the obstacle of leaving it in a suitable place, with the care it needs and that they will give it the same love that we give it at home.
There is a wide variety of boarding houses for pets, mainly for dogs and cats, where your pet will have a space to sleep, food, surveillance and can live with other pets.
Choosing the ideal boarding house is not an easy task, each pet has needs and is used to different treatment, which is why knowing the bare minimum that your pet will need and what a boarding house can offer you is essential.
Traditional pensions
When leaving our pet in the care of a boarding house, we will always prefer the one that can give it similar conditions to those it has at home with us. Therefore, it is advisable not to look for a pension based on proximity, but rather based on the services offered.
In a traditional boarding house where you bring your pet, it stays in the facilities for a few days and then you pick it up, you can count on different services in addition to a roof where you can spend the night.
The Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) recommends looking for those that have well-trained caregivers, quality food, and adequate space for the night. Additionally, some boarding houses offer transportation, walks, veterinary care, and bathing services.
The prices of a pension of this type can vary depending on the season and the city in which they are located, for example, in CDMX you can hire services from 300 pesos per night and can go up to 500 pesos. In the interior of the Republic, prices can start from 200 pesos.
Individual pensions
Nowadays there are many pets that are treated more humanely at home, they sleep in their owners’ beds, eat foods other than croquettes, wear clothes, etc. And, logically, these animals are more accustomed to having contact with humans than with other pets.
If that is the case with your animal, it is probably best for it to go to an individual boarding facility. In these you can choose a sitter so that your pet can stay with him at home, can sleep inside and have similar treatment to what you give him at home; Normally this scheme can be found in apps and digital platforms.
Ignacio Guglielmetti is CEO of Cuida mi Mascota, an app that connects caregivers with owners, and he explained that it is not that difficult to find someone to take care of our dog or cat during a trip.
“From the app they can search for a person who has what is ideal for each animal, if you want it to sleep with the caregiver or need special attention, all of that can be found,” Guglielmetti explained.
Being a more personal and close service, it is possible to order specific instructions for the care of your pet, times to take medicine, for a walk, for feeding or for treatment are some of the advantages of this service.
Likewise, each caregiver has ratings and reviews of the caregivers, so you can be more certain that the person you are hiring has experience. You will also be able to see photographs of the space where your pet would be to think about whether that caregiver is suitable or not.
“In CDMX we have more than 5,000 caregivers and we operate in all the big cities of the country, practically in all the states,” explained the CEO of Cuida mi pet and added that prices start at 200 pesos per night.
Requirements for your pet and board
Any establishment that offers to care for your pet must have its membership contract registered with Profeco, and it will be that agency that will intercede in the event of any dispute between the client and the service provider.
For the safety of your pet, the main boarding houses in the country require that the animal have all its vaccinations and a current card, be dewormed at least six months before, be at least four months old and that you fill out a form detailing its social characteristics and of behavior.
You must pay special attention to the responsibilities that the board acquires in the contract, this in case of any situation of fight, bites or accidents that may occur and affect the health of your pet. In that sense, Profeco recommends looking for pensions that have well-established emergency plans for any eventuality.
