Due to competition, chains have been constantly evolving to stay in the market.
Success Stores.
Grupo Éxito is one of the main retail chains in Colombia and the region, with a trajectory that spans several decades. The company has a wide variety of business formats that include supermarkets, hypermarkets and stores. Among its most representative brands are Éxito, Carulla and Surtimax, each aimed at different market segments.
In the competitive Colombian market, Grupo Éxito has faced significant challenges due to the arrival of new players such as D1 and Tiendas Ara, chains that have transformed consumer preferences with business models focused on low prices and discount formats. These companies have captured an important portion of the market, especially in urban and rural areas, offering high-turnover products at competitive prices.

The emergence of these chains has forced Grupo Éxito to adjust its commercial strategies to maintain its relevance. However, this evolution has also led to strategic decisions that imply the disappearance of some of its brands in the market.
A few weeks ago, Grupo Éxito announced that Carulla would begin a transformation process until it became ‘Colombia’s supermarket’. To achieve this, the conglomerate made strong investments in some points of the chain in cities such as Medellín and Bogotá.
“We recognize the legacy of this brand that will soon turn 120 years old and We will continue working to reach all corners of the country. There is still a lot of work to be done, but with these two renovations of Galerías, in Bogotá, and Gran Vía, in Medellín, we are taking another step in that direction, supplying the stores with more products, better prices and an excellent quality of fresh products.” , stated Carlos Calleja, executive president of Grupo Éxito, in dialogue with Portafolio.
Another of Grupo Éxito’s strategies consists of the disappearance of three well-known brands: Surtimax, Super Inter and Surti Mayorista. This with the aim of promoting Carulla and Éxito stores.
In that sense, with the unification of brands, everything that is hypermarkets, that is, the sale of food, household appliances, clothing and so onwill remain under the domain of Éxito warehouses. For its part, anything from supermarkets will be exclusively from Carulla.
Consumers and users of these important Grupo Éxito brands are waiting for what will happen with this new era of the business conglomerate. which seeks to increase its presence nationwide and provide a better experience.
It should be remembered that these are not the only supermarkets that will close by 2025, since the Colombian Family Subsidy Fund, Colsubsidio reported that at the end of 2024 it will close 76 supermarkets it has in the country.
