In a recent exchange about the situation of the military prisoners in Uruguay, the extupamaro Hector Amodio Pérez spoke about the statements made by Lucia Topolansky and Jose Mujica. During an interview on the YouTube channel Contraviento TVAmodio expressed his surprise and satisfaction at Topolansky’s statements, who mentioned that certain soldiers are imprisoned due to false testimonies.
Amodio criticized Topolansky’s claims, stating that they were a confirmation of what he and others had previously maintained. He declared: “The first thing was a huge surprise, mixed with an intimate satisfaction because in some way she came to confirm what both Álvaro Alfonso for years and I, more recently, had been saying.” This comment provides additional context to the controversy surrounding the topic.
Divergent positions and political maneuvers
Mujica’s statements, who argued that the alleged false statements were made by people with a grudge, were rejected by Amodio. He considers this to be part of what he described as a “political maneuver”. According to him, there is a need to understand the objective behind these statements, stating: “I don’t know for what purpose it is done. “That is what we have to try to unravel, it is an unknown.”
Amodio also highlighted the strangeness of influential figures facing multiple political forces that have been fundamental in their careers. “It is inexplicable that they have consciously taken on all the political forces that have brought them to the place they occupy,” he commented, noting that this confrontation appears to be unprecedented.
Possible alliances on the political horizon
In the same interview, a possible alliance between Mujica, Topolansky and the leader of Open Town Hall, Guido Manini Ríos. Amodio revealed that there have been rumors about an agreement for the Cabildo Abierto deputies to vote with the Wide Front in the next legislature. “That is practically a done agreement, according to the information that has reached us,” he said, which adds another layer of complexity to the current political scenario.
The former member of National Liberation Movement (MLN) highlighted that Manini has been advocating for house arrest for the military personnel over 75 years of ageand stated that “that promise exists.” This suggests that the background to the recent statements could be linked to negotiations at the legislative level.
Amodio expressed his opinion regarding Mujica’s future position in the event that house arrest for the military is not implemented. “Mujica would be in a slightly uncomfortable position against Manini”, he noted. Thus, the situation becomes even more complicated, raising questions about how the relationships between the actors involved will develop.
