In the early hours of this Friday, the staff of the Municipality of San Román and police, using heavy machinery, removed tents that occupied sidewalks and streets in the Benigno Ballón neighborhood, around the Plaza San José de Juliaca.

This surprising operation was led by the staff of the commune’s Deputy Management of Markets and Commercial Platforms, who pointed out that they had previously notified merchants to free public roads, but they ignored it.

According to the municipal official, Jorge Luis Malma Limachi, this action was carried out to guarantee the development of commercial activities in the area, especially with the proximity of the Christmas fairs.

He urged store salespeople to use their premises exclusively, reminding them that the rental contracts are only for internal spaces and do not give them the right to occupy the sidewalks or part of the streets.

The affected merchants, after the operation, staged a protest, questioning the municipal authorities. “Why don’t they make the canteens and nightclubs operational? We are merchants, not criminals,” said a mother. They added that they ruined their merchandise, in addition to threatening to set up their tents again.
