Tomorrow (1st), the city of Rio de Janeiro celebrates its 457th anniversary. To celebrate the date, the tourism sector will hold an event at the Cristo Redentor Sanctuary, which will begin at 6 am with a blessing from the Sanctuary’s rector, Father Omar Raposo, followed by a breakfast organized by the Rio Convention & Visitors Bureau (Rio CVB), in partnership with the Sanctuary, the Paineiras Visitors Center and the Federation of Commerce of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Fecomércio RJ). The celebrations will end with the Holy Mass in Thanksgiving for the city’s anniversary, at 8 am, presided over by the Archbishop of Rio, Cardinal Orani João Tempesta. The mass will be broadcast on the Sanctuary channel by social networks.
About 80 authorities and representatives of hotels, bars, restaurants, tourist attractions and class entities will meet at the tourist spot, at breakfast, to honor the capital of Rio de Janeiro and the people of Rio and mark the resumption of tourism after two years of losses caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
The bets for the recovery of the sector are in the carnival that, even without revelry, moves the city this holiday and expects to move again in April, and also in the return of the face-to-face events this year. Around 100 festivals and congresses have already been confirmed for 2022, generating revenue of over $500 million.

The executive president of Rio CVB, Carlos Werneck, highlighted that the tourism sector has lived two very difficult years with the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. “But now, we can already see good signs of recovery. Bars and restaurants, hotels, attractions and tourist services were able to adapt well to health protocols and, together with the constant growth in vaccination adherence, offer a safe experience to visitors. We certainly have a lot to celebrate on this city’s anniversary and the place couldn’t be more special”, said Carlos Werneck.
At the end of the Mass, Cardinal Archbishop Dom Orani João Tempesta will leave a message of peace and solidarity for the city. The mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, will receive from two children, a young man and an elderly person, symbols that represent Rio’s welcome to all who visit it, the beauty of the city, with its wonders and challenges to be overcome, and the faith of the people.
