Card payments have had sustained double-digit growth in the last year due to the greater supply of cards on the market. Of the 877 million payments that were made in November, 71% correspond to debit card payments and 29% to credit cards.
In Mexico there are approximately 39.9 million credit cards, of which 33.8 (84%) belong to banking institutions; Regarding debit, the figure amounts to 194.9 million cards, according to data from Banxico and the National Banking and Securities Commission (CNBV). In the Annual Panorama of Financial Inclusion 2024, from the CNBV, it stands out that in an international comparison Mexico is one of the countries whose inhabitants make the least card operations.
While Mexicans make an average of 53.5 card payments, in Argentina the average is 107.2 transactions; In Brazil, a person makes an average of 227.9 card payments. The contrast in the use of plastics is greater when compared to economies such as the United Kingdom, where adults carry out an average of 516 operations and in Canada 393.5 transactions are carried out.
Where do Mexicans give the most ‘cards’?
Between January and November of this year, Mexicans made their purchases with cards in retail and large stores, with more than 1.6 million operations.
However, it is in parking lots, fast food and miscellaneous establishments where the greatest percentage growth in payments has been recorded.
