The Constitutional Court declared unfounded the lawsuit in which the incorporation of the former president was proposed Martin Vizcarrato the Congress of the Republic.
As is known, Vizcarra ran for the Congress of the Republic for the period 2021 – 2026 and won a seat as the candidate with the most votes nationwide.
However, despite his electoral success, he was subsequently disqualified from holding public office by decision of Parliament itself.
Faced with this situation, the former president filed a request for protection so that he can be reinstated and be able to serve as a congressman, which has finally been declared unfounded by the Constitutional Court.
DISABLED FOR FIVE YEARS
On May 11, 2022, Congress approved the constitutional complaint against former President Martín Vizcarra for allegedly having links with private companies during his tenure as Minister of Transportation and Communications.
By 67 votes in favor, 5 against and 15 abstentions, the national representation gave the green light to the report supported by the rapporteur on the case, Congresswoman Elizabeth Taipe (Perú Libre).
The president went to the Legislative Palace with his lawyer, Jonathan Correa Arias, to exercise his right to defense. There he reiterated his innocence and stated that the complaint advanced when he made public his decision to run as a congressman in last year’s elections.
“It is an accusation not of a technical or legal nature, but to get me out,” he said, referring that Vilcatoma’s accusation was “frozen” for three years and its processing and approval was carried out in just 4 months.
The report is based on the constitutional accusation presented in 2019 by former parliamentarian Yeni Vilcatoma, who indicated that Vizcarra Cornejo would have had a stake in the Obrainsa company.
The former president had also been disqualified from holding any public office due to the case of irregular vaccination with doses of Sinopharm, a case known as ‘Vacunagate’. Due to this, he could not receive his credential as a congressman elected by Somos Perú.
