From ‘pet friendly’ to ‘pet family’

From 'pet friendly' to 'pet family'

In Ecuador there are services to provide multiple benefits to pets, ranging from personalized cakes to home taxis and even blood banks.

Pets are already part of the family members. This has been called a new family type: interspecieswhere it is evident that pets provide numerous benefits for humans, such as stress reduction, the generation of dopamine and oxytocin and learning to have a responsibility.

Given this trend, services designed to satisfy pets in various areas: safety, aesthetics, nutrition, emergencies…

So we go from a concept pet-friendly to a new one: ‘pet family’.

The first pet blood bank, called drop of life emerged in 2020 in Quito. They specialize in veterinary blood products for dogs and cats.

They state that blood donations are very important so that there are blood reserves that can be used for other pets to save their lives.

So far they have managed to help around 60 dogs and cats with their products and they continue to grow.

They currently have one donor network of 14 dogs and 5 cats.

They explain that in cases of needing blood for a pet, now the responsibility of obtaining the product no longer rests with the ownerwhich created complications in achieving a quality blood type.

‘Drop of life’ is the first pet blood bank in Ecuador.

Prosthetics, pharmacy and transportation

The mobilization it is also a problem when you have pets. Many times it is difficult to get a taxi to transport a dog or a cat in an emergency, as they usually charge more money or they are bothered by the dirt that it can cause.

This need was discovered by both Marco Lozada What Evelyn Jumbowho offer these services in Guayaquilin different undertakings.

‘Taxipets’according to Lozada, arises first as a need to mobilize physically disabled pets, because his dog was paralyzed by an illness.

That’s how it came upPets on wheels’, a service to supply prostheses, wheelchairs and other items; and, ‘Taximascotas’, to mobilize dogs and cats to veterinarians, to other provinces and even to other countries.

“In the end we transported a family member. For many they are children, nephews, grandchildren… There are older people whose pets are their livelihood to stay active and happy. And we like being able to help mobilize these loved ones,” says Lozada.

Other additional services of Lozada include ‘pharmapets’an online pharmacy for pets with home deliveries.

In the case of ‘autopet’, the idea arises in a similar way. Her pet got sick and there were no taxis available to take her to the vet, so Evelyn Jumbo and her husband Eloy Rea decided to create pet taxi to help other people.
