The governments of Ecuador and Venezuela broke diplomatic relations on April 6, 2024 after the events at the Mexican Embassy
The governments of Switzerland and Ecuador signed an agreement this Thursday, December 19, for the European nation to assume some of the diplomatic and consular functions of the Andean country in Venezuela, after Quito and Caracas broke relations following the incursion of Ecuadorian security forces in the Mexican Embassy to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas.
The agreement, signed in the city of Bern, seeks Swiss facilitation so that diplomatic channels between Venezuela and Ecuador remain open; which deepens and formalizes the work that the European country has been doing in Caracas.
This agreement was signed by the Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Councilor Ignazio Cassis and the Ecuadorian ambassador to Switzerland, Verónica Bustamante.
In September 2024Ecuador indicated that it would attend to consular requests in Venezuela electronically and through the Consulates in Bogotá and Panama City.

“In order to continue providing consular services for Ecuadorian citizens who are in Venezuela, without the need for them to travel to another country for this purpose, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility established an action plan after the closure of the Ecuadorian consulate in that territory,” reads the statement.
The signing of this document is recorded one day after the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeldconfirmed that the administration of Nicolás Maduro conditioned the departure of the six opponents, linked to Vente Venezuela, who are inside the Argentine Embassy in Caracas.
Sommerfeld revealed that a safe passage was requested from Venezuela for former Vice President Glas, who is imprisoned in the maximum security prison of La Roca after having been extracted from the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador, a situation that generated the rupture of relations with the Aztec nation.
In addition, he wanted the release of a person close to the Venezuelan Executive who is detained in Argentina.
